Albigel-P

The product vision for ALBIGEL P is as a novel wound healing medical device, produced as sterile “pre-formed gel pads” aimed at international markets including Europe and the USA for a range of conditions including venous stasis ulcers, diabetic ulcers, pressure sores and eventually burns.

These albumin-based protein polymer gels, given the generic name “Albigels” form a platform for a broad range of topical and biologically degradable implantable gels. These gels retain the unique ligand-binding properties of free albumin, so a variety of biologically active therapeutic agents can be easily bound or incorporated into the gels to expand the product portfolio as desired.

APS are developing products that address the immediate needs of the clinician and patients and in particular control of infection, pain and odour control. The first gel to have a therapeutic agent added is CuGel containing copper as an anti-infective and growth promoter.

The product composition of ALBIGEL P is HSA solution and a co-polymer, a defined citrus pectin (CP), together with an activator, N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N’-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). Pectin is a natural polysaccharide which has an inherent swelling ability, and is incorporated in the gel for its ability to control moisture levels at the wound site. Pectin has an excellent safety record. It has long been a natural constituent of the human diet, and with the increasing interest in its natural properties, pectin is now commonly used in pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Albigel-P has been developed as a sterile “pre-formed gel pads” to meet the needs of the clinicians and patients when treating chronic wounds which include

Control of infection
Control of odour
Control of pain
Accelerated wound healing and tissue repair (cell attraction and re-epithelisation, anti-scarring).

The Albigel wound dressing has properties that enhance those of traditional and advanced wound dressings and provide active healing similar to the more cellular based skin substitutes at reduced cost. There is added benefit of comfort to the patient and ease of use by the clinician.
