Capitalizing on the properties intrinsic to HSA that have potential
benefit to enhance wound management and repair, APS is developing
a range of products using a novel HSA gel formulation (Albigel)
for topical administration to external wounds
The gels provide an optimum environment for wound healing, maintaining
a moist environment and high levels of HSA. They can be produced
in a range of sizes, are robust but flexible and are easily moldable
to fit over difficult wounds or on the sacrum and heel. Albigel is
made entirely from natural products, and is a safe non-toxic, non-allergenic
wound dressing.
APS`s pilot product is Albigel-P. This has shown outstanding results
in preclinical trials and is performing well in phase I/II clinical
safety trials in venous leg ulcers. Albigel-P is easy to apply and
remove and has been accepted by both clinicians and patients.
APS is also developing its lead product, CuGel, a copper based formulation
based upon Albigel-P that extends the wound management capabilities
of the original gel into other areas of wound repair including anti-infection
and the promotion of essential cellular events (eg angiogenesis,
re-epithelisation and matrix remodeling) through targeted delivery
to the wound site.
APS is preparing to take CuGel into Phase II/III human trials in
early 2009.
It expects to begin commercialising its first products in the treatment
of chronic ulcers within 2 years.
